Do I Need a Racing License?
No for HPDE, yes for wheel-to-wheel — and the path between the two is shorter and cheaper than most people assume.
HPDE requires no license
High Performance Driver Education days are open to anyone with a valid driver's license, a compliant helmet, and a car that passes tech. That's it. You'll be placed in a novice run group with an instructor in the right seat.
Competition requires one
Every sanctioning body has its own route, but they rhyme: log some number of HPDE days, complete a licensing school or novice program, get a physical, and run supervised races before you're signed off.

The cheapest legitimate path
For most people: a handful of coached HPDE days, then an endurance race as part of a multi-driver team. Endurance gives you hours of wheel-to-wheel experience for a fraction of the per-hour cost of sprint racing, and the culture is famously welcoming.
