Second Gear Stories: The $500 Car and the $5,000 Problem

Our first endurance build, told honestly — including the part where we spent a whole season learning one lesson the hard way.

It started as a bargain

The car cost five hundred dollars and ran. That felt like winning. What we hadn't counted was the cage, the seat, the harnesses, the fuel cell, the brake upgrade, and the three weekends of wiring that followed.

The season we finished nothing

We DNF'd repeatedly on the same failure, chasing symptoms instead of the cause. It cost us an entire season and taught us the most valuable thing we know: prepare for reliability first and speed second. An endurance race is won by the car that's still running.

Why we tell this story

Because every customer we take out benefits from that season. Everything in our cars exists because something failed and we fixed it properly. We're not reading from a manual — we paid for this education with our own money, and we hand it over for free.

Perseverance is most of this sport. Show up, fix it, come back next month.
